Design Dilemma……..What to put above a sofa

Design Dilemmas

Welcome friends to our first installment of Design Dilemmas.  One of our readers sent us an email about the wall above her sofa.  Her walls are paneled with beautiful trim and splits right down the center where the sofa sits.  She writes:

Do I hang a single picture.  Picture sizes?  or a group or what to do on wall, especially a split wall like this.  It seems so formal, but house is anything but.

      Karen H.
I don’t know about the rest of you, but I LOVE the trim on these walls and think they really add some interest to the space.  I have designed two examples of how she can dress these walls.
You could add a pair of abstract art like these from Ballards to help balance the space.  Taking cues from the colors in the art you could pull this color down to the sofa with fun pillows like these from West Elm (here & here).  To finish off the space you could add a small floor lamp like this one from Wayfair, and even add a plug-in style wall sconce like this one from Lamps Plus.
Option 2:
Now not knowing her particular design style I did create another option that was a little more glam ( how could I resist, right?!)
Hanging a set of these four mirrors from Horchow and adding a sunburst mirror to the center will add some serious drama above the sofa.  Some fun David Hicks black & white pillows and a touch of leopard finish off this luxe look. The brass floor lamp is from Ballards.
Which look do you all prefer?  The clean & simple art or the glamour look?
Well Karen I hope this helped inspire you to create something fun above your sofa!  Once you decide what to do we would love for you to share your photos with us!

LOVE the glam look! It’s amazing how a little bling brightens up a room!

both are great, but I LOVE the glam look!

Both choices are great but the glam look really knocks it out of the park! Love it!!

Thank you so much for two beautiful designs! While I absolutely adore the mirrors of the GLAM option, my home would look out of sync since we are very casual. The walls are oak paneled, although painted, and I have been very cautious to place anything on them. The living room is also opened to the second floor, probably at least 18′ in the entire living area. The space behind where I’m standing to take the photo are two patterned burgundy accent chairs. My plan is to go with the casual look and try to find a complimentary color for the chairs, or find chairs to accent the art chosen. Thank you again!

I love both… but I think option 2 is my fav! I also think sofa needs to slide a smidgen to the right! Great design advice… I would expect nothing else!

Both are good options but #2 gives it that little extra glam! Can’t wait to see what she picks.
